Nashville, Tennessee

We started out the New Year 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee, and there we encountered our first chilly weather, dipping substantially below freezing. The cold weather seemed appropriate as Allan, Morgan, and Mason went to see an NHL game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Nashville Predators. It was quite an experience cheering for a ‘visiting’ team, and the guys definitely felt out-numbered. It didn’t help that the Oilers lost that game 5-2.

We celebrated Elise’s 15th birthday (Jan. 5) by going to the Grand Ole Opry at the historic Ryman Theater in downtown Nashville. It was a fun evening of music. There were lots of golden oldies there, including Jimmy Dickens, Mel McDaniel, George Hamilton IV, and John Conlee. The kids enjoyed the more up-to-date entertainers like Chuck Wicks and Darryl Worley. Once you see the singers live-onstage, you sure recognize their music more on the radio.

Our evening bus tour of the city included local civil war sites, the Parthenon, the state capitol building, the ‘mall’ (gardens and statues stretching for about a mile down the hill from the capitol), an acre-big stone map of Tennessee, the ‘bat’ building, and several downtown saloons. We even saw some would-be country and western stars singing on the street corners; Nashville seems to be a city where people dream big dreams.
