Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, Plains, Georgia

Close to Andersonville is the town of Plains, Georgia. This was and still is the home of former US President Jimmy Carter, who was elected in 1976 as America’s 39th president. The town boasts several Jimmy Carter points of interest: the farm where he grew up, his old high school, his former campaign office (which is located in the old train depot), the church where Mr. Carter still teaches Sunday School lessons, and a National Park Service Visitor Center. We spent the day learning about this honorable man, one of three American presidents to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Plains, Georgia is also famous for its agricultural crop: peanuts. In the peanut store on Main Street we tried peanut-flavored ice cream, peanut brittle, fried peanuts, and boiled peanuts. That was a true southern experience.
